The GTA 6 Map: What Rockstar Has Actually Confirmed
Every confirmed region of Leonida, the real source of the "twice the size of GTA 5" figure, and why Rockstar still has not published a map of its own.
Here is something odd about the most-repeated fact in GTA 6 coverage.
Rockstar has never published a map of Leonida. No size in square miles, no square kilometres, no overhead image, nothing. Seventy-six days out from launch, the studio has released three trailers, thirty minutes of gameplay and a wall of screenshots, and not one of them is a map.
And yet you have absolutely seen the number. Twice the size of GTA 5. It is in headlines, it is in thumbnails, it is stated as flatly as the release date. That figure is real and it is traceable - but where it actually came from is a better story than the number itself, and it is the reason three different sites will tell you three different things about how confident to be.
So this is what is actually nailed down, what came through a side door, and what nobody outside Rockstar North knows yet.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s, according to figures that originate with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. Vice City alone is about double Los Santos.
The full set of comparisons, as reported:
- The Leonida map is around twice the size of GTA 5’s
- Against Red Dead Redemption 2, roughly three times the size
- Vice City on its own is about twice the size of Los Santos
- Vice City plus its surrounding suburbs is around eleven times Los Santos and its surrounds
That last one is the number worth sitting with, and it is the one most coverage skips past. It is not saying the city is eleven times bigger. It is saying the built-up sprawl around it is on a completely different scale to GTA 5, where the countryside was mostly attractive scenery between two places you actually wanted to be.

Where those numbers actually came from
Not from a press release. From a creator who was in the room.
Rockstar flew a small group of creators and journalists to Rockstar North in Edinburgh in July 2026 for hands-off preview sessions - Rob Nelson played, the guests took notes and could ask him to go somewhere or try something. The embargo lifted on 27 August alongside the Extended Look.
The size comparisons came out of those sessions. Nelson gave them verbally, and they reached the public through a video by the creator TGG, with Screen Rant reporting it first.
That chain matters, because it has been flattened in both directions:
- Some outlets report it as “Rockstar officially confirms” - which overstates it. Rockstar published nothing. A developer said it out loud in a room.
- Others report it as TGG’s own estimate, filed under community analysis - which understates it badly. These are not a fan’s calculations off trailer footage. They are numbers from the person running development, relayed by somebody who was sitting there.
The honest description is the middle one: a Rockstar developer’s own figures, carried by a creator with direct access. Close to official. Not the same as official. And worth more than nearly anything else circulating, because the alternative sources for map size are people counting pixels in a trailer.
The six confirmed regions of Leonida
Rockstar has named and shown six areas of the state. These are not leaks or reconstructions - the studio has published assets for every one:
- Vice City - the Miami analogue, the centre of gravity, roughly twice Los Santos
- Leonida Keys - the island chain running south, standing in for the Florida Keys
- Grassrivers - the wetlands, the Everglades equivalent
- Port Gellhorn - a coastal working town, faded and industrial
- Ambrosia - inland, small-town Florida
- Mount Kalaga National Park - the forested high ground, and the biggest tonal departure from anything in GTA 5

Six named regions is not the same as six regions total. Rockstar has consistently shown areas without naming them, and the Extended Look on 27 August revealed streets, beaches, waterways and interiors that have not been attached to any of the six. Treat the list as a floor, not a ceiling.
For the district-level breakdown of Vice City itself, that is a separate piece - see every Vice City location confirmed so far.
What Rockstar has said in its own voice
Strip out everything relayed second-hand and the studio’s own on-the-record description of the map is short, and entirely qualitative. Nelson, speaking to IGN, called it “a big map, a very big map” containing “a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently”, and described the world as the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex one Rockstar has ever built.
That is it. No dimensions. No map image. Adjectives and superlatives.
Which is a deliberate choice, and a familiar one - Rockstar did the same with Red Dead Redemption 2 and released the map into the wild only when the game did. If you are waiting for an official Leonida map before launch, the pattern says you will be waiting until 19 November.
What nobody actually knows yet
Being clear about the holes, because most map coverage is not:
- No square mileage. Every figure you have seen in miles or kilometres is somebody’s arithmetic off a comparison, not a Rockstar number. Treat all of them as rumour.
- No confirmed region count. Six are named. Whether that is most of the state or a third of it is unknown.
- No confirmed interior count. The Extended Look showed interiors. Nobody has said how many are enterable.
- No verified water-to-land ratio, which matters more here than in any previous GTA given the Keys and the wetlands.
- Community mapping projects - the reconstructions built by comparing trailer frames against real Florida geography - are genuine analysis of published footage and often impressively rigorous. They are also estimates, and the good ones say so. Anything claiming precision beyond that is guessing.

Bottom Line
The size figures are solid enough to plan around. Twice GTA 5, three times Red Dead 2, and a built-up area outside the city on a scale the series has never attempted. They come from the person running the game, even if they arrived through a YouTube video rather than a Newswire post.
What is not solid is everything downstream of that - the square mileages, the region counts, the confident overhead maps. Those are reconstructions wearing the clothes of facts.
The genuinely interesting question is not how big Leonida is. It is that eleven-times figure for the sprawl outside Vice City. GTA has always been a city game with countryside attached as connective tissue. A built-up area eleven times the size of GTA 5’s suggests Rockstar has stopped treating everything outside the city as the drive between missions - which, if it holds, changes what the game is more than any dimension does.
For the wider picture of what the Extended Look showed, the full Trailer 3 breakdown covers it, and if you want the real-world comparison, we lined Leonida up against actual Miami and Florida.
TLDR
Q: How big is the GTA 6 map?
A: About twice the size of GTA 5’s map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s. Vice City alone is roughly double Los Santos, and Vice City with its surrounding suburbs is around eleven times Los Santos and its surrounds.
Q: Has Rockstar officially confirmed the map size?
A: Not in a publication. The figures come from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson during hands-off preview sessions in July 2026, relayed publicly by the creator TGG. Rockstar itself has published no dimensions and no map.
Q: How many regions are in Leonida?
A: Six are named and shown: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Whether more exist is unconfirmed.
Q: Is there an official GTA 6 map image?
A: No. Every map circulating is a community reconstruction from trailer and gameplay footage. Rockstar withheld the Red Dead Redemption 2 map until launch and appears to be doing the same here.
Q: How big is Leonida in square miles?
A: Unknown, and every specific figure you will see is somebody’s estimate derived from the comparison multipliers. Rockstar has never stated an area.
Q: When will we know for certain?
A: Grand Theft Auto VI releases on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The map becomes verifiable the moment people are playing it.
No official map yet. I'll post it the hour Rockstar does.
