How to Make Money in GTA 6

How money works in GTA 6 - bank, cash and loot, what you can rob, fences, and the story points that wait until Jason and Lucia have enough cash.

Before launch

Where this comes from

Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6 yet. Everything here comes from the hands-off previews at Rockstar North - chiefly TGG's conversations with Rob Nelson - and Rockstar's own edition pages, and every card names who saw what. Each one gets checked against the game once it launches on 19 November.

Money

What we know

How does money work in GTA 6?

GTA 6 keeps money in three places. A BuckMe bank balance is safe. Cash that Jason or Lucia carry can be lost if they die, so it has to be paid in at an ATM. Stolen goods ride in a duffel bag and are worth nothing until a fence buys them. TGG saw all three on screen at Rockstar North, and Rob Nelson walked TroisCouleurs through the cash risk.

How do you find robberies in GTA 6?

Mostly by hearing about them. Rob Nelson told TGG that people ask favours and pay you back with tips, contacts from the story point you at targets, and events in the world lead you to others. Bigger targets can show on the map with a rough estimate of the take, but small stores and gas stations are not marked. Safe codes have to be found or overheard - in the session TGG watched, a fence texted one over.

What can you rob in GTA 6?

Almost any store, with a ladder of bigger targets above them. TGG puts local stores such as convenience stores and phone repair shops at the bottom - worth a couple of thousand dollars at most, he guesses - then jewellery stores, banks and gang compounds, plus vans he likens to mini heists. Rob Nelson adds payday loan places, and the Ultimate Edition includes one compound raid of its own. TGG expects the biggest heists to be story missions, but says he does not know.

Do you need money to progress the story in GTA 6?

At points, yes. Rob Nelson told TGG there are spots where Rockstar slows or stops the story until Jason and Lucia reach certain cash goals, so some robbing is required. He said the team is balancing that for players who only want the story, and that the pauses give events time to settle and new contacts time to open up.

How do you make money in GTA 6?

Mostly by robbing places between missions. Rob Nelson told TGG you can try to rob any store you walk into, hit criminal and gang compounds for drugs or cash, and do it alone or as a couple, then take the goods to a fence. Nelson calls making money this way, off mission, an important part of the game.

What is a fence in GTA 6?

A black market buyer for stolen goods. Loot sits in a duffel bag until a fence pays for it, and fences specialise - TGG names drug, jewellery and car fences - so the right one depends on what was taken. They unlock as the story goes on. Rockstar's edition page lists garages with a secure place to leave stolen goods waiting to be fenced.

Can you buy property or businesses in GTA 6?

Garages yes, the rest is unconfirmed. TGG could not get a definitive answer on businesses or property and leans towards no for businesses in the story. He says safehouses cannot be bought, because Jason and Lucia are on the run. Rockstar's editions do add garages - Shore Court near Ocean Beach and the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay - each with a weapon locker.

What can you spend money on in GTA 6?

Clothes, makeup, hairstyles, car customisation and garages, according to TGG, plus a fee to register a stolen car as a personal vehicle - though high-end cars cannot be registered at first. He says Rob Nelson acknowledged that GTA 5 left players with too much money at the end of its story and too little to spend it on. Rockstar has not said what the bigger purchases are.

How do store robberies work in GTA 6?

No two go the same way. TGG describes stores with back doors to slip in and out of, security cameras to deal with, safes in back rooms that need a code, and clerks, guards or customers who may try to be heroes. TroisCouleurs says the two store robberies in its Rockstar North session played out differently, from the shopkeepers' reactions to the police response.
