Grand Theft Auto VI’s Vice City is Miami, and Rockstar isn’t coy about it. Its own Vice City page names “the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands of Ocean Beach”, “the bustling panaderías of Little Cuba”, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and “the VC Port, the cruise ship capital of the world.” That’s Ocean Drive, Little Havana, a flea market and PortMiami with the serial numbers filed off. What’s remarkable is how little filing Rockstar did - the day the first trailer dropped, Miami’s own press was matching individual buildings.

Vice City Overview

One thing to say up front: Rockstar has never called the state Florida. It’s Leonida, which VGC traced to Juan Ponce de León, and it stays Leonida on every official page. The matches below are what locals and mappers have seen. They’re good, and they’re still readings of a trailer, not a statement from the studio.

South Beach: The Iconic Art Deco Paradise

Real Miami’s South Beach: Pastel Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive, red-cement sidewalks, sports cars crawling past the outdoor tables. It’s the most photographed strip in the city and the one everybody expected Rockstar to nail.

GTA 6’s Ocean Beach: Rockstar’s own name for it, and Miami New Times, reviewing the first trailer, called the strip “an obligatory, if unoriginal, ode to Miami Beach’s most notorious strip” - “from the sports cars to the art deco buildings and red-cement sidewalks, Rockstar pretty much got this spot-on.” The Miami Guide goes building by building, matching the hotel fronts to 1500 Ocean Drive, the Hilton Bentley and the Clevelander, which Dexerto matches to the in-game Ocean View Hotel.

What the matches show:

  • The hotel row is recognisable frontage by frontage
  • The sidewalk colour is right, which is the kind of detail only a local checks
  • The skyline behind it is a remix - Miami New Times noted towers like the Blue and Green Diamond appear, “though not in real-life locations”
  • The beach itself is the trailer’s crowd showcase, hundreds of people deep

Digital Foundry gave the first trailer a 37-minute technical breakdown, and while its business is pixels rather than postcodes, it’s the best look at how much of this is real-time lighting on real geometry rather than a cinematic. Worth the watch before you argue about accuracy.

Downtown Miami: The Business District Transformation

The MacArthur Causeway Shot

Real Miami’s downtown is Brickell money, Biscayne Bay and a skyline that changes every year. The trailer’s best-known downtown shot is a drive along a causeway with the towers ahead, and Miami New Times pinned it: “this is similar to going westbound on the MacArthur Causeway, with the rightmost skyscraper featuring a cutout identical to the real-life Marquis building.”

The highway gantry in that shot is a map in itself. The signs read “Kelly County - VCI Airport 404 West”, “Catalan Blvd 3” and “Stockyard/Downtown”. Kelly County is Miami-Dade. VCI is Miami International. And Catalan Boulevard is Biscayne Boulevard - Biscayne comes from Spain’s Bay of Biscay, so Rockstar swapped one Spanish region for another. Miami New Times’ line on it: “these small details show Rockstar has done its research.”

The Rest of Downtown

Matches made by Miami New Times, Screen Rant, Dexerto and The Miami Guide:

  • Brickell becomes Downtown Vice City, with The Miami Guide matching the Brickell on the River and 500 Brickell towers
  • The Kaseya Center, home of the Heat, becomes the Sahara Arena
  • The Venetian Causeway is in, and Miami New Times nailed it down by the stair-shaped Venetian Isle condo
  • The Rickenbacker Causeway, Virginia Key and Key Biscayne all get a take, which made Miami New Times wonder how big the map is
  • Club Space downtown is the model for the in-game club - the DJ booth and hanging planters give it away
  • Wynwood becomes Stockyard, with a mural Miami New Times likened to local artist Ahol Sniffs Glue and a pastel facade like the home of Zak the Baker

The Florida Keys: Paradise With Problems

The Keys are a chain of islands on one highway - paradise if you don’t mind hurricanes and the traffic. Rockstar’s version is the Leonida Keys, and its own page sets the tone: “The dress code is casual, the bars are loaded.” Life there “isn’t flashy but it’s easy”, and you are “right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.”

Real Keys, in-game Keys:

  • The Miami Guide matches the long bridge shots to the Seven Mile Bridge and the vacation-town feel to the real island chain
  • Dexerto matches a tourist stop to Rain Barrel Village, the roadside stop in the Keys
  • Rockstar’s cast is anchored here - Jason works for local drug runners and lives at smuggler Brian Heder’s property, “a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys”

Port Areas: Where Business Gets Dirty

Miami’s port is one of the busiest in the country for cruise ships and cargo, with a long history as an entry point for things that don’t go through customs. Rockstar’s page calls the VC Port “the cruise ship capital of the world”, which is PortMiami’s own boast about itself. The Miami Guide matches them directly.

Port Gellhorn is a different place - not Miami’s port at all, but Leonida’s “forgotten coast”, which the mappers put in the Panhandle. Rockstar’s page: “Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls won’t bring the tourists back, but there’s a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot. It’s fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks.”

The Everglades: Wilderness and Danger

The Everglades are a river of grass moving imperceptibly through sawgrass, mangrove and gators - beautiful, dangerous, and historically ideal for making things disappear. Rockstar’s version is Grassrivers, “the untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown”, and its page promises “far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves” than the gators.

Everyone who’s mapped it - Dexerto, The Miami Guide, the forum thread - lands on the same match, and the trailer’s airboats and gator-in-a-pool shot don’t leave much doubt. Miami New Times had the best note on the pool: locals are taught to assume any body of water in Florida might have a gator in it.

Scale and Compression: The Gaming Reality

Nobody Knows the Size

Real Miami-Dade is fu@king huge and no game fits it. How much Rockstar compressed it is unknown - there is no official map, no square-mile figure and no region count, and any ratio you’ve read is a guess. What is on the record is that Rockstar has named six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Our map hub keeps that list current.

The Mapping Community

The deepest work on all of this is a single GTAForums thread. PC Gamer describes fans “mapping Vice City with an impressive thread of analysis and speculation that’s quickly approaching the 11,000 post mark”, run by people who did the same for GTA 5 a decade ago, and whose process “included an initiative to sweep every StreetView of Panama City.” That’s the Panhandle town Dexerto and The Miami Guide both match to Port Gellhorn. When people say the fan maps are accurate, that’s the effort behind it - and it’s still a reconstruction, because Rockstar has published no map.

Creative Enhancements

Rockstar took liberties, and the biggest one is vertical:

  • Mount Kalaga - a national park “up against the state’s northern border” with “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails”. South Florida is flat as a table. Rockstar built itself a mountain
  • Ambrosia - sugar country around the Allied Crystal refinery, where “the local biker gang provides almost everything else”. Dexerto matches it to the Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee area
  • A remixed skyline - real towers, rearranged
  • Two Miamis in one - Miami New Times spotted a “Leonard County” police car that looks like a Broward Sheriff’s cruiser, so the county next door is in the mix

Cultural Accuracy: Beyond Just Buildings

Real Miami has layers - the tourist strip, the neighbourhoods, the money, the underground. The trailer plays all of them, and Rockstar’s own Vice City page frames the city as “the glamour, hustle, and greed of America captured in a single city.”

What Rockstar names, and what it maps to:

  • Little Cuba - Rockstar’s own name, with “bustling panaderías”. Little Havana, per The Miami Guide, down to the bakeries and domino parks
  • Tisha-Wocka flea market - “the bootleg brands”, in Rockstar’s words
  • Stockyard - the arts district that Miami New Times and The Miami Guide both read as Wynwood
  • Kelly County and Vice-Dale County - the two county names Screen Rant pulled off signs, one of which is Miami-Dade with a wink

The Florida Man Layer

The one thing no other city could give Rockstar is the news. The trailer’s social-media montage - a woman twerking on a moving car, a man struggling with a gator - reads as parody until you learn it isn’t. Miami New Times: the twerking “actually happened - in fact, New Times reported on it in 2017”, a woman on a car “eastbound along the MacArthur Causeway.” Rockstar didn’t exaggerate Florida. It quoted it.

The Verdict: Impressive Accuracy With Smart Liberties

What Rockstar nailed:

  • The Ocean Drive strip, frontage by frontage
  • The MacArthur Causeway approach, down to the Marquis building cutout
  • Wynwood, the Venetian Causeway, Club Space, the Kaseya Center
  • The feel of the Keys and the Everglades
  • The news

Where they got creative:

  • A mountain in a flat state
  • A skyline rearranged for the camera
  • Distances compressed by an amount nobody outside Rockstar knows
  • A Panhandle town, a sugar town and the Keys all inside one state you can drive across

TGG’s side-by-side is eight minutes of exactly this - trailer frame, then the real place, including the Florida Man references.

Looking Forward: A Living, Breathing Miami

The real test is how it feels to drive. Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick told CNBC, in the middle of explaining the delay, that “Rockstar Games is trying to create the best thing anyone’s ever seen in entertainment, not just interactive entertainment, and that’s a tall order.” PC Gamer reported the line with the note that Zelnick doesn’t play games himself, which is fair. But you don’t need to play to see what the studio is going for here.

Rockstar didn’t copy Miami. It read the local paper, walked Ocean Drive, and built the feeling. For anyone who’s spent time in the real city, Vice City is going to feel like coming home. For everyone else, it’s one hell of an introduction - and November 19, 2026 is when the doors open.

TLDR (I’m in a hurry) 😉

Q: Is GTA 6’s Vice City based on Miami?

A: Yes, and Rockstar isn’t coy about it. Its own Vice City page names Ocean Beach’s “pastel art deco hotels”, the “bustling panaderías of Little Cuba” and the VC Port as “the cruise ship capital of the world” - Ocean Drive, Little Havana and PortMiami. The state is Leonida, never Florida, a name VGC traced to Juan Ponce de León.

Q: Which real Miami locations are in GTA 6?

A: Matches made by Miami New Times, The Miami Guide, Dexerto and Screen Rant: Ocean Drive as Ocean Beach, the MacArthur Causeway approach down to the Marquis building’s cutout, Brickell as Downtown, the Kaseya Center as the Sahara Arena, the Venetian Causeway, Club Space, Wynwood as Stockyard and Little Havana as Little Cuba.

Q: How accurate is GTA 6’s Vice City?

A: On Ocean Drive, Miami New Times’ verdict was “Rockstar pretty much got this spot-on” - sports cars, art deco fronts and red-cement sidewalks. The skyline is a remix: real towers such as the Blue and Green Diamond appear, “though not in real-life locations”.

Q: How big is the GTA 6 map compared to real Miami?

A: Nobody outside Rockstar knows. There is no official map, no square-mile figure and no published compression ratio. Rockstar has named six regions, and the most detailed fan map is a GTAForums thread PC Gamer put at nearly 11,000 posts - still a reconstruction.

Q: What did Rockstar change from the real Florida?

A: It built a mountain in a flat state - Mount Kalaga National Park on the northern border - rearranged the skyline, and put a Panhandle town, sugar country (Ambrosia, which Dexerto matches to the Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee area) and the Keys inside one state you can drive across.

Q: Are the Florida Man moments in the trailer real?

A: The twerking-on-a-moving-car clip is. Miami New Times reported the actual incident in 2017, a woman on a car heading eastbound along the MacArthur Causeway. Rockstar didn’t exaggerate Florida - it quoted it.

Ammo

It's not a copy of Miami. It's the feeling of Miami. That's harder.
