Will GTA 6 Have Online? Rockstar Never Actually Said No
GTA 6 launches as a single player game with no online mode announced. Here is what Rockstar, Take-Two and reporters have said about GTA 6 Online.
No online mode has been announced for GTA 6. Rockstar describes the game launching on 19 November as a single player experience, and it hasn’t said whether a separate online mode is in development.
Plenty of posts have taken that as confirmation there will never be a GTA 6 Online. I don’t read it that way, and I don’t think the evidence does either. Below is what Rockstar, Take-Two and the people who have asked about it have actually said, and where I think this is heading.
What Rockstar has said
Rockstar’s pre-order announcement on the Newswire, published on 24 June 2026, puts it plainly:
Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Sony’s store page says the same thing in answer to its FAQ question “Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?” - the reply there is “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.”
Both statements describe the game that ships in November. Neither mentions GTA Online, a future multiplayer mode or a timeline for one.
That’s careful wording, and I don’t think it’s an accident that it only covers launch. Rockstar has told you exactly what you’re buying on 19 November and nothing about what comes after it.

What happened when Rockstar was asked
The Kinda Funny crew visited Rockstar North for a preview and talked about the trip on their show on 27 August. Asked whether GTA Online came up, they said they raised it several times, and described Rockstar’s response as “we’re not talking about that right now.”
One of them read from his notes that he had asked what was happening with GTA Online, and that Rob Nelson pointed at the screen and said the game in front of them was all he was thinking about. That is a recollection read out on a live show rather than a recording, so I’m treating it as a paraphrase.
What it does show is that Rockstar was asked directly and chose not to answer either way. A flat no would have been easy to give, and nobody gave one.

What Take-Two and reporters have said
Take-Two is keeping GTA Online running
On Take-Two’s earnings call in August, reported by PCGamesN, CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked about GTA Online’s update schedule and the resources behind it. He said:
the cadence hasn’t really changed and we do apply significant resources to that, and we do expect to support GTA Online going forward.
That confirms the current game continues after GTA 6 launches. It says nothing about a new version, but it does tell you Take-Two isn’t treating GTA Online as something to wind down.
Jason Schreier’s comment
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who had recently interviewed Zelnick about pre-orders, said in a video in early August that Rockstar “has not talked at all and is not planning to talk anytime soon about what the new GTA Online will look like, and what that recurring spend will look like.”
PCGamesN, which reported the comment, noted that Schreier didn’t cite a specific source, so this isn’t confirmation. What I noticed is that he didn’t treat the existence of a new GTA Online as the open question. For him, the open question was when Rockstar starts talking about it.

How GTA Online launched last time
GTA 5 released on 17 September 2013, and GTA Online followed on 1 October. Before launch, NBC News reported that it would be available to all GTA 5 players “through an in-game menu selection free of charge.” Rockstar described it at the time as “a dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players.”
The situation is different now. GTA Online is sold as a standalone product, has its own paid membership in GTA+, and has grown into something far bigger than the game that launched in 2013. That’s why I don’t think the two-weeks-and-free playbook is much of a guide this time.

When GTA 6 Online might arrive
There’s no announced date. The most specific prediction so far comes from Forbes writer Paul Tassi, who wrote on 29 August:
The most likely situation here is that we are a year or two out, at least, from GTA 6 Online, rather than two weeks, and that will very clearly not come with the end-of-service for GTA Online.
His reasoning covers three areas:
- Finishing GTA 6. The game has already been delayed, and he argues launch polish is Rockstar’s priority. He also says that doesn’t mean nobody is working on future online content.
- GTA Online’s revenue. By his figures, it peaked at $744 million in microtransaction spending in 2020 and still brings in around $400 million a year. Polygon cites roughly $1.3 million a day between September 2025 and April 2026, but that figure comes from hacked financial data rather than an official disclosure.
- Timing the switch. Rockstar has to decide when to move players to a new game without cutting off income from the current one.
Tassi presents this as analysis rather than reporting from sources, and Rockstar hasn’t commented on timing. His reasoning lines up with mine, though I’d add a factor he doesn’t lean on, which I’ll get to below.
One related detail: digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include a free month of GTA+, the membership for the current GTA Online. Tassi reads that as Rockstar keeping players invested in the existing game for now, and I think he’s right. The Ultimate Edition breakdown covers what else comes with each edition.

How GTA 6 and GTA Online could fit together
Polygon’s Jen Glennon set out three possibilities in an analysis piece on 28 August.
A new GTA Online set in Leonida
Glennon calls this the more exciting but less plausible option. She suggests the Red Dead Online team could have been working on it since Rockstar wound that game down in July 2022, and questions whether even Rockstar could deliver a huge single-player game and a new live-service game at the same time.
GTA 6 content added to the current GTA Online
This is her safer bet. The current GTA Online runs on PS4, Xbox One and PC, while GTA 6 is only confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced. Adding GTA 6 content to the existing game would reach players who can’t run the new one.
No crossover for now
Glennon now considers this the most likely outcome, because official previews have said nothing about GTA Online’s future.
I think she’s right about the short term, and I think the reason comes down to where GTA Online’s players actually are.
Why players can’t all move across yet
The console gap
GTA Online runs on PS4, Xbox One and PC. GTA 6 is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no PC version announced.
If an online mode launched alongside GTA 6, anyone in a friend group still on an older console, or playing on PC, would be left behind. For a mode that lives on people playing together, that’s a big problem.

Rockstar is still backing GTA 5 roleplay
On 1 September, Rockstar announced it is supporting nopixel V, a new version of a roleplay server it says has “set the standard for the genre”. The closed beta runs through the Rockstar Games Launcher, and Rockstar promises a new PC in-game overlay and expanded access.
That’s a lot of attention on GTA 5’s multiplayer less than three months before GTA 6 launches. I covered it in the nopixel V piece, and roleplay is a big part of the GTA creator economy too.

Bottom Line
GTA Online is too big for Rockstar to walk away from. It still earns around $400 million a year by Tassi’s figures, and people keep coming back because they play it with their friends. I fully expect a bigger, better version built in Leonida.
I just don’t expect it soon. My read is that GTA 6 launches as the single-player game, GTA 5 stays where people play together, and GTA 6 Online arrives once everyone can make the move, most likely around the time GTA 6 reaches PC.
TLDR
Q: Will GTA 6 have online?
A: No online mode has been announced. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as “a single player experience” launching on 19 November 2026, and has neither confirmed nor ruled out a separate online mode.
Q: When will GTA 6 Online come out?
A: There is no announced date. Forbes writer Paul Tassi predicts it is at least a year or two away, based on Rockstar’s focus on launching GTA 6 and the revenue the current GTA Online still generates. That is analysis, not a confirmed plan.
Q: Why might GTA 6 Online take longer than GTA Online did?
A: GTA 6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced, while the current GTA Online runs on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Rockstar is also still investing in GTA 5’s multiplayer scene, including its September 2026 support for the nopixel V roleplay server.
Q: How long did GTA Online take to launch after GTA 5?
A: Two weeks. GTA 5 released on 17 September 2013 and GTA Online launched on 1 October 2013, free to GTA 5 players through an in-game menu.
Q: Will GTA 6 Online be free or sold separately?
A: Unknown. Rockstar hasn’t announced pricing, bundling or access for any future online mode.
Q: Will the current GTA Online keep running?
A: Yes, for now. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in August 2026 that the company applies “significant resources” to GTA Online and expects “to support GTA Online going forward.”
GTA Online is where people play with their friends. The next one arrives when those friends can all make the jump.
